People don’t often ask themselves how often they should clean their furniture — in fact, they might never have it cleaned at all. That’s a real shame since cleaning your furniture can:
- Improve its appearance
- Remove any unpleasant odors
- Clear away any allergens (such as dust and pet dander)
- Extend its life
Why Don’t People Clean Their Furniture?
Take a look under a cushion of your sofa or armchair — you should find a tag that provides one of the following cleaning codes:
- S = Solvent
- S/W = Solvent and Water
- W = Water
- X = Cannot be Cleaned
It’s no coincidence that manufacturers try to conceal the cleaning tag — most simply don’t want you cleaning their products.
You see, dirt and grit grind against upholstery, causing an aged, worn appearance and making tears and splits more likely. If you don’t clean your furniture, it’s likely to end up looking older and wearing out faster.
Guess what that means? You’ll be buying more.
Instead of playing in their way, arrange cleaning. In a process similar to carpet or rug cleaning, furniture cleaning can keep yours looking its best.
How Often Should You Clean Your Furniture?
Honestly, it really depends on you. At least once a year is a good timescale, but only if there are no pets or young children in the house. If you have cats, dogs, young children, or simply lots of visitors, you should think about having your upholstery cleaned three or four times a year.
You should also arrange a cleaning if your furniture fails the following tests:
- Take a clean, white cotton towel and rub it over the back and arms of your sofas and armchairs. Is it grey and smudged? If so, it hasn’t passed.
- Rubber band a piece of black fabric over the end of your vacuum cleaner hose, then run it over the upholstery. If white debris collects, there’s too much dust or dander.
